Self-Neglect

Self-neglect is defined as behavior by an older person that places his/her health or safety at risk. This includes: the failure of an older person to provide themselves with food, water, shelter, and medical care.

Indicators of Self-Neglect

Indicators of self-neglect include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Dehydration or malnutrition
  • Poor personal hygiene
  • Untreated medical conditions
  • Hazardous living conditions
  • Unsanitary living conditions
  • Inadequate clothing
  • Homelessness or inadequate housing
  • Confusion
  • Substance abuse
  • Inability to perform daily tasks
  • Poor financial management
